Reclaim Your Bank Charges

Love Travel? Hate Banks?

Want a way to make your bank fund your next trip without taking out a loan or an overdraft?

Here's how...

Remember the last time you travelled? You went way into your overdraft, maxed out your credit cards and took out a loan you couldn't afford. Every month you were just over your overdraft and your numerous banks charged you extortionate amounts of dough in order to tell you this fact, leaving you more and more desperate until you donated your mind to psychiarty students, your body to medical trials, and your anus to the desperate inmates of your local maximum security prison in order to pay off your debts?

Well, it turns out that all of the charges you've paid in the last 6 six years were, arguably, illegal. And although your banks won't admit that fact, they will settle out of court in order to avoid a Judge setting a precedent opening the floodgates to a billion pound nationwide refund.

That's right - your banks will repay the money they have charged you for bouncing cheques and direct debits, and for going over your overdraft limit.

It's a very simple process, and there is a detailed explanation of how to get this refund here. But in short:

  1. Write to your bank requesting details of every charge over the last 6 years. They are legally required to provide you with this information within 40 days, but may charge you up to £10.
  2. Write to your banks asking for your money back.
  3. Threaten to take to your bank to court
  4. Send round the baliffs!

Now. The Money Saving Expert has written template letters, created a calculator to help you add interest on to the amount the bank owes you (oh this is fun isn't it!), and given you the legal details behind all this, so do pay the site a visit.

I'm going to start the process tomorrow, and as I've been a particulary ripe victim for this kind of financial rape I should be in for a windfall of perhaps £1000+ (Oh happy Day!), so I'll keep you all up to date on how it's going, and on the subsequent trip this haul should fund!

Although it's very quick to learn how to claim your bank charges back, a big problem people are facing is the negotiation stage and not fighting for the full refund that is applicable.

Thanks offering to help folks Mark, but for the record, I received an offer of a refund from one of the banks last week, so the whole process has taken me 3 months and involved writing two letters and going through my statements. Easy Money!

After just 3 and a half months, I received around 85% of the total amount I asked for from 2 seperate banks, totalling almost £900!

Have a go guys, what have you got to lose?!
