Money Saving Tips
The philosophy here is don't spend money on things you don't have to and you will be able to afford to travel longer, further, and do/see/experience more things.
Travel light - you will save money on taxis and be more willing to find cheaper hostels.
Accomodation - don't pay $10 for a room if you can pay $5. Or $5 if you can pay $3. These may seem like minimal savings but accomodation will be your biggest expense and you can save hundreds of dollars over time.
Negotiate: most hostels offer a discount for payment in advnace. If you are staying somewhere for 2 weeks or more, talk to the manager about this.
Stay with familes: sometimes difficult to find but cheap and often an excellent way to learn more about the culture you are in.
Food & Water - Another big expense. Make savings by cooking for yourself if possible, don't be tempted into fancy restaurants (this will not be how you remember yur trip!), main meals are often very cheap, but snack disproportionately expensive, avoid this tempatation!
Travel - Go by bus! it's the cheapest and best way to see the country you're in. International buses are more expensive - take local buses to the border and cross it yourself.
Hitch hiking is possible in most countries, but unless you're confident don't do it alone. Your best bet is to haunt truck stops, gas stations etc.
Sight Seeing - Do it yourself! Most tours will be charging you for something you could easily do or see for free.
Volunteer - Can be a very cheap way to extend your trip in a country and get experiences you wouldn't be able to otherwise. Avoid agencies and go straight to the organizations. The internet is your best resource. Help Exchange is a great place to find food and board in exchange for work all over the globe.
Work - With the right blagging skills you can fnd work teaching English almost anywhere, even if you're not a native speaker. head for the cities, write up a killer CV, get a list of schools and get knocking! Tell them you have experience or even pretend you have a TEFL certificate. What's the worst that can happen if they check? Don't expect to save money, but you can pay for your stay somewhere for 2 hours work a day. You can also exchange English lessons for all sorts of things- meals, room, language lessons.
If you have a talent, use it! Make jewellery, paint, design websites, the possibilities are endless! You should try to sell to other travelers - they have more money and will usually be more than willing to support a fellow traveler.
Fruit picking, waiting, working in Irish bars....you will make much more money by working an extra month before you leave, and you should weigh up the pain with the gain. ie; if the work is not fun, how much will your trip benefir from it. It may not be worth it.
I would say leave the working alone until you find somewhere that you want to stay somewhere for a while, then make an effort to pay your way. Don't stay somewhere that's not fun or interesting simply because you've found some work (unless the pay makes it worthwhile).
